Because She's a Woman, Why Else?

It's no secret to those that know me - I'm a Barack Obama supporter. Actually, I'm more than a supporter - I've *gasp* campaigned for him. Alright - I'll go ahead and confess the whole story - I've campaigned for him when he *gasp* was running against Hillary Clinton.
Yes, I know - I'm a traitor to women everywhere. A woman ran for the highest office in the land and I refused to help her put another few cracks in the glass ceiling. How could I? After all - she's a woman. Never mind that I don't trust her or that I believed several other candidates would have made a better choice - she's a woman DAMMIT!!
Now I have another chance to redeem myself. Sarah Palin is running for the second highest office in the land, but I'm a traitor again because I'm not going to vote for someone with whom I disagree on every major political issue. What? She's a woman DAMMIT!! We women should stick together because the pundits, many politicians and even some women say that women will vote for women BECAUSE they're women. Women should never betray other women!
I would *love* to see a woman as President or Vice President - truly I would. In fact, it kills me that the two women who have been closest to the offices were women I could not in good conscience vote for. I will not, however, vote for a woman *because* she's a woman any more than I would vote for Barack Obama because he's African American or Bill Richardson because he's Hispanic.
My vote is given to the person with whom I most agree on the issues. I would hope that's how every American would vote (yes, again, I know that's not the case but it *should* be). Of course, it may be difficult for some people to actually even determine the candidates' positions on the issues because first they must wade through innuendos, distortions, misdirection, and even flagrant lies.
Take Lipstick Gate as an example. Yes, that's what Newsweek is calling the current stink brewing between the Obama and McCain camps. Here's what started it all.
The McCain camp is loudly alleging that Obama's "lipstick" remark was a direct, sexist attack on Sarah Palin. Their proof - Sarah Palin in her VP address at the GOP told the stale joke that the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull was lipstick. Doesn't matter than Obama was clearly speaking about John McCain's claim that his policies will bring change to Washington. Doesn't matter that it's a commonly used phrase. Representatives from the GOP are hitting all the networks telling people that women everywhere should be outraged by Obama's *sexist* remarks and they know that they will be because women are smart enough to see through Obama (see a little NLP in that last part?) How incredibly insulting to thinking women everywhere.
Hopefully women are smart enough to say stop this idiotic misdirection all of you (both sides) and focus on the issues. I don't care if you're male, female, Republican, or Democrat - tell me what you are going to do to fix the mess this country is in. I'll decide for myself who gets my vote based on your positions on the issues.

I've heard this line of thinking as well. I'm sure you're aware, but the term for it is 'identity politics', and yes, I fucking hate them as well.
I'm white, so I should therefore vote for McCain. I'm a woman, so I should have voted for Hilary.
Well, fuck off and fuck you all, I've liked Obama since he first showed up on the radar and I still do! :)
The past 8 years have convinced me that the hallmark of Republicans is that they will do and say anything to get elected. The Sarah Palin phenomenon is very illustrative. I have read a number of accounts of her, both positive and negative, and I believe that her primary function is that of a mirror. With limited information, disaffected voters are manipulated by her (former Bush) speechwriters and advisors that she reflects their views. Some of the descriptions of her career in Alaska, when the hysteria is stripped away, paint her as a standard politician. She professes strong 'values' beliefs, but will only push for them when there is no risk to her own standing. If something is popular, she claims it as hers. If it is unpopular, suddenly she is against it. This is what all politicians do, whether on the left or on the right. However, if I were evangelical, I would look into how much she pushed for evangelical issues when it was difficult. If I were extremely liberal, I would take heart that she bends with the wind. If the Republicans succeed in maintaining her as a mirror they will win. If they fail, they will lose. We shall see.
OMG! That was hot!
If i send You $100 will You do another "bitchy" post?
(peels of laughter)
Seriously, i respect You for being politically active and voting Your conscience.
I’m a man. I’m going to vote for Obama because he is also a man. I am then going to go vote again, this time for McCain, because he is a man, too. I don’t care if it’s against the rules. I’m trying to be fair. Let no one accuse me of being partisan.
And speaking of pigs, some seem to apply more grease to themselves than others, no doubt in a vain attempt to escape the grip of truth.

PS: I hear that Revlon is coming out with a new Bacon Shade of lipstick in time for the elections. A spokesperson for the company said that it is intended to be gender neutral and laced with porcine pheromones which will arouse anyone. Representatives of both political parties are reported to have placed huge orders for the cosmetic ahead of time, just in case Pork Barrel Spending is not going to become as dead as some people say it will. Mmmmmmmm, ........ kiss, kiss, and taste that fat!
Robert,
Was this a bitchy post?
I really held back, too :)
...tell me what you are going to do to fix the mess this country is in. I'll decide for myself who gets my vote based on your positions on the issues.
And that's part of the problem - we too often go by what a candidate claims that he will do, instead of looking at past performance. Politicians say a lot of things - it's what they learn to do. However, looking at past performance is usually a better indicator of what they would do in the future.
As an aside, I vote Libertarian or Independent almost all the time because I dislike the actual - as opposed to the professed - policies of either major party. I don't like that one party wants to control what I do in my bedroom, or that the other party wants to control who I can associate with, and what I should do with my money.
That said, I'm simply amazed at the shock and outrage among Dems who are ranting about Palin. While she professes to be an old-fashioned conservative, her voting record and her actions on various bits of legislation indicate that's she's actually pretty neutral on many issues. I don't know if it's because she's slyly going after the religious conservative vote, or (being from Alaska) she simply takes a more libertarian view (e.g., that she has her own opinions, but doesn't believe it's right to force her beliefs on everyone else).
However, the thing to keep in mind is that Palin is not the one running for Pres. Or is she? By the wailing and gnashing of teeth, one would think that McCain has already dropped out and is switching places with her.
I would rather people vote their conscious with full information than vote their gender with ignorance! I wont be voting for Sarah Palin...we should start a party! I will bring the wine and sex toys. You supply the tush pictures. I have the perfect platform for us to run on...and I believe we will have a nation of women behind us! ~~Dee

I hope so. I've heard that polls indicate that many women are migrating her way.
Tom said, However, the thing to keep in mind is that Palin is not the one running for Pres. Or is she? By the wailing and gnashing of teeth, one would think that McCain has already dropped out and is switching places with her.
I don't see a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth - but I guess our points of view probably differ :)
It is legitimate to be concerned about the VP choices of both McCain and Obama. Let's face it - McCain will be the oldest president elected for a first term if he wins. Obama could easily be shot by some rabid idiot.
