Lady Julia,
Cruelty is cruelty.
Abuse is abuse.
I agree whole-heartedly.

People are too damn sensitive. Humor is humor. Yeah sometimes it is cruel but so what? Blow it off.
If one consults their Jane Austen, a fine writer of sense and propriety, one will notice her observation that, "wit," is at someone else's expense. Humour is something me share with others to enrich our lives.
Although one might argue I am being holier than thou?
I hope you have not been the brunt of someone's humour-maksed cruelty. You deserve only high priase and admiration!

For some reason cruel humor is received well unless it "fits" the recipient then offense is taken.
Look at the popularity of standup comics who utilize cruel or tactless humor. Michael Richards would have been all right if he'd picked bald men or stupid women to make fun of.
You can even find this type of "humor" happening on some of the popular FemDom blogs. People tend to say more on those blogs and agree more with the comments the writers make than they do with sensible writers. They quote these people as if they are someone to be admired.
There's a difference between good-natured humor and cruelty. Adults who use cruel humor always remind me of the bullies in junior high school. Maybe they are the same people only in bigger bodies.
TVH, no - no one has been cruel to me. Thank you for being concerned :)
In the past I sometimes let nasty remarks get under my skin but I think that was more stress related than anything. It was easier to get upset by things said by people I barely know or don't know at all, than it was to be upset about all the serious things happening in my life.
This post, brief as it was, really came about because I'd read a piece that I thought was quite cruel. I was surprised by the number of people who appeared to find this writer humorous and to be admired no matter what he/she says. The words were clearly designed to belittle many others while lifting up the writer as a beacon of all knowledge in his/her field. When someone has to put down others to make themselves feel good, I don't see that as humorous or intelligent in the slightest.
Nigel, I don't think you are being holier than though at all. You make a fair point and I agree that wit is pretty much at someone else's expense. Gentle teasing that leads to a sort of "laughing with not at you" sort of situation isn't really bad in my opinion. We all need to laugh at ourselves because let's face it - sometimes we're funny :) What disturbs me is that sort of derisive humor that makes the focus feel horrible for being who they are or thinking what they do.
Sign of the times really. Blogging and writing have become talk radio. Civility and tolerance are not as important as getting noticed.
Over it:)
I’m going to try to write a story for the new fiction website and for your site. Wish me luck!
Thanks for being such a wonderful person.
Hugs and warm smiles:)

Susan, I think you're quite right. It used to really surprise me that a community built on tolerance and respect is sometimes populated by some very disrespectful and intolerant people. Not much surprises me anymore.
I'm glad you're going to submit a story! Your writing is wonderful.
Hugs back :)
