Melinda Doolittle - Trouble is a Woman

I love this style of music, especially this particular song, and thought Melinda gave a great performance. Yes, I've become hooked on a second reality show. Watched my first ever episode of American Idol last night and can't believe it, but I found out what the rest of America has been talking about.

I'm avoiding the show, but you're right -- that was a fun song.

Smiles - you're one of the reasons I decided to watch, Robert.

What do you think about the other contestants? Can't remember their names but thought the first two were *terrific*!

i thought Phil Stacey had a very strong night.

And Jordin Sparks also did well, especially at age 17.

i'm fairly certain these were the first 2 performances last night.

For the sake of time, we tend to watch the performance shows only and skip the results shows, as the voting results are posted on the web site.

Oh I didn't know that. Still, I liked watching the comments from the... are they called judges? That Simon person could certainly benefit from being taken in hand by a strong woman.. I suspect he's deliberately nasty as his "image"?

And ... what was with that eye roll thing after that guy said something about the Va Tech students? Seemed like he tried to recover for it later, but I can't imagine anyone would deliberate roll their eyes at a statement like that.

Jordin and Phil - yes - I imagine they'll be big some day.

i totally missed the eye rolling/VTech comment and have no clue on that - i certainly hope nothing inappropriate was said.

Usually there is eye rolling on all sides targeted at Simon, who is basically a rich music mogul able to recognize talent but who has no actual performing experience. He sits as a judge opposite real performing talents Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, and often a guest judge (other successful composers, performers, producers). The sparks that fly are often played up for the viewers. The judges do more actual determinations of who will come to Hollywood earlier in the competition and that part of the season is actually quite hilarious. Once they get the finalists to Hollywood, it's up to the voting public to determine who goes and stays.

So now the comments from the judges are given after each performance to provide guidance and feedback only - and sometimes to persuade the viewing public.

Then there is a shorter show each week to reveal the public vote - which performers fall in the bottom 3 and who goes home. That show has a lot of recap of the actual performances with occasional personal content about each performer. That's the show we tend to skip.

OK... i'm way too into this!

Here's the story from ABC's point of view

I suppose I accept that he wasn't responding to the VA remark, but it does seem odd that he heard what the guy said about nasal singing but didn't hear the next remark. Still, as I said, I can't imagine anyone being silly enough to do that intentionally with cameras around.

After reading this WJLA ABC News Article describing Simon's reaction, i think it was an unfortunate camera change which missed Simon's local table interaction that would have given context to Simon's reaction. i think it would be grossly out of character for Simon Cowell to react that way to the terrible tragedy at VA Tech. It was a bad time for him to not be paying attention.

The judges clown with each other frequently and sometimes it's a bit of a mystery what's going on between them.

And even the contestants have often acknowledged that Simon's perceived insensitivity toward them while on camera is about showmanship - they say in person he's a really nice guy.

Still, the right Woman's touch could always do wonders!

Ah, see - he just appeared to be a collosal butt to my newbie eyes. I didn't get the impression that he was rolling his eyes at the tragedy, but rather that he might have been rolling his eyes at the guy's "shoutout". Either way, it was unfortunate.

"'It's just like everything. Everyone second-guesses everything these days,' said Bunnell."

Isn't that the truth.

So back to these contestants (and yes, I really have lived in a cave regarding this show), I think Jordin and Phil have some star quality. Have all the winners gone on to have good careers in the music business?

OH YES!

Perhaps not ALL the winners have found success as others might define it. Each of the 6 seasons has been a little different for the contestants. And there is no guarantee for any of them, but i think it's fair to say that the road to success has definitely become a little more "paved" over time. And many have found their dream careers.

Each season the winner and a handful of finalists have had the opportunity to begin new performing careers after their contract period of group traveling performances for American Idol is completed. Even before their contract is finished the most prominent performers are usually appearing on the early morning and late night talk show circuits.

Several have produced CDs that ride the wave of their seasons and beyond and/or gone on performing tours. My all time male favorite, Clay Aiken (a runner up) and Kelly Clarkson (a winner) are examples. From last season, winner Taylor Hicks and Runner-up Katharine McPhee hit the ground running and are just beginning to ramp.

Former contestant Jennifer Hudson just received an Oscar for her performance in Dreamgirls. Diana Degarmo & Carrie Underwood come to mind for becoming successful performers in their areas of interest.

Some have been offered lead positions in performing groups. Semi-finalist Chris Dautry comes to mind.

One interesting example is Ruben Studdard, who won his season, but chose to pursue a path less travelled in Gospel music.

This article takes a look at 5 former contestants with regard to career path. And this Silicon Valley blog

First posting here and I should start by saying I find you to be one very erudite Domme indeed.

Melinda Doolittle, in my informed opinion, is ALREADY the best Operatic Range singer in America today. You've picked an excellent song to demonstrate why in "Trouble is a Woman".

She doesn't feel the need to show off the range in EVERY LYRIC LINE of EVERY SONG ala Mariah (the Screeching Harpy) Carey. She sang "Trouble" in the up-tempo sassy mid-range style that was appropriate and waited til the very end to hold a note and shake the rafters. That's called singing.

She could sing superbly from Day One of the competition. It's also heartening to note that she's taken full advantage of the mentors and is 1) Smiling more. 2) More outgoing. 3)Moving on Stage.

I'll close by saying that if your OTHER reality TV favorite is "Top Chef", I will be forced to ask to be collared by your side for eternity.

Don
