Wonder Woman

After reading Helpmate Hubby's recent post on comic book Villainess "Star Sapphire", I remembered an interesting article I'd read a few months ago. "Truth, Dominance, and the American Way" details the origin and life of comicbook-land's most famous superherione, Wonder Woman. Among the article's more interesting tidbits is the revelation that WW creator William H. Marston was a practicing psychologist who focused some of his research on the influence of dominance and submission on emotional states. If you're a comic fan, you might really enjoy that article.

I remember reading Wonder Woman comics when I was growing up and also recall pretending to be Wonder Woman while playing Superfriends with my brothers and the boys in our neighborhood. Funny how our play as children can be a predictor of some of our adult personality traits.

Earlier today my brother called and shared that Josh Whedon (of Angel and Firefly fame) was currently directing his screenplay version of Wonder Woman. He reminded me that I'd had a fondness even then for the "lasso of truth". What a pity I don't have one of those today! ;) Little does he know that I have put my Wonder Woman and Evil Cowgirl skills to good use!

It is very interesting to read about you as little girl. There was a girl in my neighborhood that loved to pretend to be Catwoman and I would have done anything just to make her smile.

I agree that children's play, when unfettered by adult interference, is a strong indicator of what our personalities will be like as adult.

Thank you for the links. Like many geeks I am a comics fan. I had not read that Wonder Woman was coming to the big screen. I did a little reading and heard that Jennifer Aniston might play her. ARRGGGHHH. I'd rather see someone like Reece Witherspoon.

I was such a perverse little kid, I would actually engineer games so that I would end up being tied up and captured by the girls. I used to know a lady who told me that she used to make up games so that she could have an excuse to step on the boys.

Funny because Linda Carter and Wonder Woman are part of my earliest memories of knowing that my sexuality was different. As a kid of the 70's, cheesy television shows like that turned me on immensely. Then by accident at around 9 years old, my Grandmother took me and a cousin to see Barbarella at the theatre and the bondage scenes were incredible. I also recall playing house with a couple of sisters in the neighbourhood and there was always a disagreement because they wanted me to play the husband, but all i was interested in was playing the family dog.

Sexuality is a strange thing...

As an aside, Joss Whedon is a phenomenal writer. Firefly was some of the best television to come out in the last decade and included many strong women characters (a hallmark of Mr. Whedon's work.) If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out!

Warmly,
lh

I think Your lasso of truth is alive and well, although not necessarily in a physical sense. ;)

Hmm, Anonymous sounded like my kind of boy. You didn't go to school in Detroit by any chance, did you? Get shoved in the chest by a little girl on the playground one day when you would have been in first grade?
