More About Hypnosis
Even though I've frequently mentioned the uses of hypnosis in training a submissive and also the truly exciting aspects of erotic hypnosis (and trust me, I do mean truly exciting and erotic - yum ;), by far the most important uses are those that are medical and psychological in nature. As many of you know, I provide nursing care for a man who has been battling lung cancer for a couple of years now. Hypnosis has helped decrease his overall anxiety and also to eliminate that horrible anticipatory nausea that people get when they're taking chemotherapy. (It's bad enough that the drugs make you ill, but when your mind makes you begin to get sick in anticipation of the next dose, that's really tough). He also sleeps better and has a better appetite thanks to hypnosis.
Hypnosis isn't mumbo jumbo. For those who aren't aware, the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association have approved the use of hypnosis as a treatment modality. University hospitals such as John Hopkins, Stanford, and the University of Manchester in England are among those who have published studies on the efficacy of hypnosis in dealing with specific physical illnesses.
Even though hypnosis is very effective for many people, there are so many myths surrounding it that many less informed individuals are frightened to even attempt it. Rather than share my opinions, I thought I would let these two sites provide you with the basic facts on this subject. They have far more credibility than one individual would anyway :)
How Stuff Works ( HowStuffWorks is the leading source of credible, unbiased, and easy-to-understand explanations of how the world actually works. Founded by North Carolina State University Professor Marshall Brain in 1998, the site has since grown to be an award-winning online resource for millions of people of all ages.)
Mayo Clinic - There's a very informative article on this site so please do visit. Here is a brief excerpt:
Myth: When you're under hypnosis, you surrender your free will.
Reality: Hypnosis is a heightened state of concentration and focused attention. When you're under hypnosis, you don't lose your personality, your free will or your personal strength.
Myth: When you're under hypnosis, the hypnotherapist controls you.
Reality: You do hypnosis voluntarily for yourself. A hypnotherapist only serves as a knowledgeable guide or facilitator.
Myth: Under hypnosis, you lose consciousness and have amnesia.
Reality: A small number of people who go into a very deep hypnotic state experience spontaneous amnesia. However, most people remember everything that occurred under hypnosis.
Myth: You can be put under hypnosis without your consent.
Reality: Successful hypnosis depends on your willingness to experience it. Even with voluntary participation, not everyone can be led into a hypnotic state.

Excellent post! i love reading Your articles.

As I recall reading recently, Femdom is a big tent (although I prefer the phrase, 'broad church').
Having listened to your hypnotic recordings I would like to state how effective I found them at inducing a state of willing and conscious surrender and relaxation.
They have led me to believe that the nature of submission is essentially a quest for inner peace - relaxation if you will. And that learning to yield to, or should that be flow with, gentle authority is a profound state of being.
Those who question the virtues of hypnosis used in this context could perhaps find less to concern them if they thought less in terms of a battle fought and more in terms of a journey shared.
I hadn't seen the mayo clinic reference before. It is very informative.
Lady Julia, a very interesting post. I am a trained hypnotherapist myself and there are a lot of misconceptions around about hypnosis.
Adding to what man puppy says, I think there is a lot of truth to his observation about submission as a search for inner peace.
In my own case, yielding to a gentle and loving authority in the form of my Wife/Mistress has me feeling deeply peaceful in my marriage relationship for perhaps the first time in my life.
man puppy, I think that's a wonderful observation about a submissive's quest for inner peace. One friend of mine told me it felt as if he'd finally "come home" when he was able to submit for the first time in a relationship.
As for those who question the virtue of hypnosis used in this context, I think it's simply a lack of experience and knowledge on their part that causes the concern. I have no problem admitting that I don't "get" some of the more sadistic practices for the same reason (not only haven't I tried them, I have no desire to *start* trying them). Many of these things seem dangerous to me and I can't even begin to fathom them in any type of relationship that bears the term "loving". Since these activities work for some people, I choose to accept that as their kink and not mine. It would be rather narrow-minded and judgmental of me to do otherwise, now, wouldn't it?
Mistress Laura's Boy - welcome :) It's wonderful to read that the two of you have found "your place".
