| SURROUNDING MYSELF WITH
BEAUTY August 21, 2005  (photographer unknown) I was watching Headline News earlier and was very moved by the story of a simple song whose words have traveled around the world. Libby Roderick's "How Could Anyone Ever Tell You" assures us that each of us is beautiful and loved by someone, even if we don't feel it at those darker moments in our lives. What a salve a song like this can be for those making that lonesome, painful journey after a difficult breakup. After my divorce a few years ago, I found myself traveling a very rocky road. It didn't matter that the break was my idea. I was still heartbroken and convinced I'd never be able to pick up the pieces. To be honest, for a time, it looked as if I might not. I knew healing had to begin from within. No one else could do this for me - I had to. I just didn't know how. Finally one day, I came to the realization that we are not just the sum of what we think. We must factor into the equation the things with which we surround ourselves. I decided at that moment to surround myself daily with beautiful, peaceful, positive things. Every day, I read something that was uplifting. I listened to music that was soothing. And... I spent a little time in self talk, assuring myself that I was strong, confident, loving, and lovable. I'd like to say the change occurred like lightning, but it was a slow, steady process. After a few weeks, I noticed I was laughing a little more and I didn't feel quite as defeated. I continue on my journey even today. I guess we all do. I never want to return to that place again so each day I continue to surround myself with a little beauty - a poem, a song, a sunset... something to remind me that my world can be serene. I hope that you do, too. And.. I hope you never forget that you're beautiful and special and someone loves you very much.
