| MILLION DOLLAR BABY August 21, 2005 ![]() A couple of nights ago I watched Million Dollar Baby starring Clint Eastwood, Hillary Swank, and Morgan Freeman. It's probably no surprise to movie-goers that Eastwood's 25th directoral work captured four academy awards in 2004 (Best Leading Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Motion Picture, and Best Director) as well as a host of other awards. This movie has all the hallmarks of a classic - strong, well defined characters, a deeply moving plot, and excellent cinematography. As some might guess, the character of Maggie Fitzgerald (Swank) held my attention from her first scene. Kudos to Eastwood for producing a film featuring a leading lady who is strong and determined without being a harridan or a lunatic. Although she's self professed trash from the hills of southeastern Missouri, she knows that life holds more for her than waitressing for the rest of her life. Maggie's passion? Boxing. At 32 years of age, Maggie is considered too old to being pursuing the pugilist's dream but that doesn't stop her. She trains and fights under Dunn's tutelage even though the aging trainer doesn't work with "girlies". Perhaps it's most apt to describe MLB as the personification of grit and guts. The story is strong and doesn't need flashy special effects or the seemingly obligatory T&A scenes to hold your attention to the heart-wrenching end. I agree with Roger Ebert. This is a masterpiece. |
