| ONE MINUTE MENTAL VACATION August 20, 2005 ![]() It's really been a stressful week for me and staying positive has become less of a natural action and more of a strongly concerted effort. As you can imagine, this isn't something I enjoy. I prefer to be in control at all times. (I know that surprises you - wink). A little while ago, I remembered reading about Wayne Perkins' One Minute Mental Vacation and I thought... "You should really consider trying something like that yourself!". For once, I listened to my bossy self! I thought I'd share the experience with you and encourage you to give it a try. First, I found a photo that would provide me with a focal point. Since I love sunsets, I chose the one above. (Many thanks to Rook for sharing this gorgeous photo with me.) As I explain, you could take this vacation with me if you'd like. You may listen to the remainder of this entry by right clicking here ~~~~~~~ Let's focus on the photo above for just a little while. Soon we'll be able to close our eyes and imagine this scene. Then we'll be able to take our mental vacation whenever and wherever we wish. As we concentrate on the colored streaks, we begin to slow our breathing. Long, slow breaths... in through the nose and out through the mouth. Deep cleansing breaths... each breath relaxing more and more. Our bodies and our minds relaxing. All our muscles going loose and limp. Yes... that's right. So very relaxed... Soon we could imagine lying back on a hillside, safe and secure... gazing up at the warm, soothing colors. On this hillside there is total peace. We've left everything behind for just a few moments as we focus on the whispy blue, rose, and ecru clouds. What a warm, peaceful, relaxing place. A place we so want to return to again... anytime we need a little break. All we have to do is close our eyes and think of those whispy clouds... so light... floating easily and effortlessly in the sky... warmed by the sun's gentle rays. And while we're so relaxed.. lying here on this hillside... our minds floating a little with the clouds.. we can feel the last bit of stress seep away... feeling lighter and lighter as our mind clears... floating... floating.... feeling so relaxed and at peace on our mental vacation. Reminding ourselves that we're strong, capable, and intelligent.... capable of handling the things that come our way. Relaxing here feels so very comfortable... so relaxing that we'll find ourselves taking a short mental vacation break whenever we need to. We can simply guide ourselves there... just as we have done now. For now, we can leave our mental vacation as easily as we began the journey. Taking with us a nice relaxed feeling... knowing that we can more easily handle the events of the day. Simply counting ... 1... 2 and 3.... wide awake and feeling so very good. ~~~~~~ Wonderful! Imagine how great we'll feel and how productive we'll be if we take several one minute mental vacations each day. If you find this helpful, I hope you'll create your own using Wayne's guidelines. :) |
