CAN SOMEONE REALLY BE HYPNOTIZED BY TEXT ONLY?
August 16, 2005

Dear Lady Julia,

I've heard several people say that you can be hypnotized by reading words that someone types.  Is this true?  How can this be?

Yes, it's entirely possible to be hypnotized by reading words that someone types.   I've done many text trances, some as the hypnotist and a very few times as the subject.  It's always with someone I trust not to "fake me out".  (As always trust on both sides of the hypnotic equation is paramount.)

Let's consider a few basic facts:

Hypnosis is a heightened state of focus.  When guided by a hypnotist, you can be focused on the words she uses, the sound of her voice, or an object that she directs you to.  You're fully conscious - you just tune out other things.  Can this happen just by reading?  Sure it can... we get lost when reading all the time.  Remember the last really good book you read and how easy it was to immerse yourself in the plot and ignore things going on around you?  That's a form of light trance - much like daydreaming.

When hypnotized, the subject experiences a heightened state of suggestibility.  When guided by a hypnotist, you're likely to embrace her suggestions eagerly.  Think you don't accept suggestions when reading?  Tell it to advertisers :)  We are constantly barraged with suggestions that we need their products, crave their products, MUST HAVE their products :)

You don't have to close your eyes or remain perfectly still to be hypnotized.  Think back to the last time you were driving and suddenly realized that you were so lost in thought (or FOCUSED on your thoughts) that you couldn't remember stopping for stop signs or traffic signals.  We zone out (or focus on our thoughts) quite often when doing many mundane activities like washing the dishes or mowing the lawn.

So... that's briefly why it works.  What exactly happens during a text trance?

Generally when I trance someone using text, it is someone I've already tranced either via MP3 or over the phone.  Is that necessary?  Not at all - but it's easier.  The subject is then already familiar with my style and my voice and can thus "hear" my voice in their minds as I type.  I don't ask a lot of questions because I want them to be able to sit and watch the words flow up the screen.  Usually, I'll instruct them to type Y for yes or N for no as it is a little easier when they begin to slip under :)  Before we begin, I instruct them to prepare for the session if they don't already know to do so.

Then.... as I begin, I encourage them to relax their bodies and minds and progress from there.

Allowing them to follow the words as they flow up the screen....

Encouraging them to notice their breathing....

Because their breathing becomes deeper...

And slower...

Deeper and slower as they relax....

Their minds focusing on the words

As they drift up the screen...

Feeling their body and their mind relaxing....

Letting go....

And drifting down.....

It feels so good to drift down....

To let go....

Doesn't it?  Type Y for yes or N for no....

And.... it all unfolds from there (smiles).
